Control the Internet in Your Home

Many of us may feel like a 'victim' of the Internet.  Our kids are on it ALL DAY LONG!  What can you do as a parent to restrict accessing the Internet when there is a wireless network that they can access from the corners of your home?

Get to know your wireless router!
Set up a ‘Guest’ Network for kids
Almost all wireless routers have the ability to set up a ‘Guest’ network.  The ‘Guest’ network works like a hotel network.  It has a separate name and password.  You could use this guest network for your kids.  You can turn the network on and off depending on when you want your kids to access the Internet.

Look into Parental Control Settings

Newer wireless routers have Parental Control Settings.  See the video below. This wireless router allows you to restrict Internet by device and … Read More »

In today’s modern age,  the question about mobile phones is not whether their kid should have a cell phone but when should they start using it. Cell phone safety has been one of the main issues around the controversy of kids and cell phones. Finding the right phone and the carrier should be the least of your concerns, and most of your discussions should be about cell phone safety, rules and responsibility. Don’t forget that not only children should be advised on how to use their phone – the teens need a lot of guidance too.

Web-Filter for ALL!
Congratulations Will and Kate!

Just like I will congratulate siblings and relatives on their upcoming arrivals, I am so happy for the Royal Family and the new HEIR TO THE THRONE!  Yes, I did watch the two-hour date-line special that went in the very details of the arrival, which consisted of looking at the outside of the hospital and talking to people that happened to be there.

What is the Cloud?

What is the cloud?

Are you too embarrassed at this point to ask, “What is the Cloud?”  Just like a Neighbor that moved in a year ago, it’s a little awkward to ask their name now.  Don’t worry it is never too late to learn!

The cloud is a computing service that is not tied to a physical device or server, but a network of server farms that can allocate resources appropriately.  Typically computing was restricted to a physical hard drive and a physical computer.  Now with cloud computing you can assign resources from a network of virtual machines to perform the same function.

Huh?

Give the Smart Phone Mom a Break

Posted on July 11th, by Cathy Olsen in Technology. 2 comments

I have seen the post about “How to miss a childhood” go around Facebook and Pinterest.  I did feel a little guilty and probably need to make a few changes.

My confessions:

My phone does sometimes feel like a breathing apparatus.
My phone is by my side at all times!
I do panic if I thought I have left my phone at home.
I sometimes just stare and my phone and think, “What will you tell me to do next?”

But, then I started thinking .. my phone is not just a toy that is used to waste time!

It is the family calendar!
It is a hub for social planning!
It is financial planner!
It can help with so many things.

You just need to figure out how to use it in a productive and healthy way.  In other words ..

A Smartphone is not a bad thing
Oh how … Read More »
