Online Rule of Agreement
This is part one in my “Top Ten ways to protect your kids on the Internet.” I will be hosting a booth at BYU Women’s Conference. I think I will have this countdown as my main topic.
STEP ONE:
1. Online Rule of Agreement – This agreement is to promote a discussion of what is allowed and not allowed. Your child is exposed to so much and in so many different ways (home computer, school, cell phones, friends' cell phones, etc.). It is not realistic to think that all of those devices have been secured. Discuss what types of sites are allowed and what is not allowed. Discuss what your child can and cannot do on the Internet no matter what. Use this agreement as a way to safeguard your child when they are accessing the Internet on computers or devices that … Read More »
A Call to Action!
This post is as much for myself as it is for anyone reading. I have neglected this site long enough. Life gets in the way However, this topic of security for the home has not left my mind. I think I felt somewhat self-conscious about my soap box. I don't want people to feel guilty. I don't want to add stress to their life. I understand the complexities of EVERY gadget that you might have. I also know it can be REALLY confusing to figure out how to make it secure.
However, I continue to see news articles of information being leaked or stolen. I continue to see increasing trends of addiction to pornography, on-line gambling, etc. I can't be self conscious of this message. We can't just sit back and TRUST that nothing will happen.
The Intenet is still in … Read More »
Confessions of a Computer Nerd
I am a Computer Nerd! Check out my score from the nerd quiz! You can click on it to see how much of a nerd you are!
I guess I have always been a nerd. There was my 7th grade to 9th grade obsession with Star Trek the Next Generation! I became a true 'Trekkie” when me and my friends got dropped off at a convention center in Detroit for a STAR TREK Convention. (I had to pay $20 of my babysitting money!!) Let me just tell you it was amazing! No, I didn't dress up as a Vulcan (I only wish) ha! But there were booths and all the Star Trek junk you could want. I even waited in line for 3 hours to get a signature from Mirina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) and Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura). I … Read More »
Today is the First Day of the Rest of my Life!
So, I did it! I started a website to share an idea that I have been beating around in my head for a few months “A mother's guide to securing her virtual world.” The original idea was to write a book. And it was going to be a GREAT book.. however, I'd have to actually 'write' it. It felt a overdue English paper every time I thought about it. So … I am choosing a format that is much more suited to my personality .. free form, instant gratification… and ONLINE.
I am glad that I got my site up and running in one day … the consequences: It is 4:30 PM, I am still in my pajamas, and my son has redecorated the hall with stickers. Ah well… you win some, you lose some.
I will try and update this site … Read More »
